Clico.ma - Free Classified Ads Portal in Morocco

The Moroccan classified ads market was dominated by a few players with aging interfaces poorly adapted to mobile use. The client wanted a lightweight, fast platform accessible from any device, with multi-criteria search by city, category, and keyword. Key technical challenges included handling traffic spikes during mass ad postings, preventing spam, and moderating unwanted content. The platform also needed an intuitive, frictionless ad submission flow to maximise visitor-to-advertiser conversion.

I built a custom classified ads platform in PHP/MySQL with a performance-oriented architecture: indexed queries, optimised pagination, and server-side caching to absorb traffic spikes. The multi-criteria search engine filters simultaneously by city (among 28 major Moroccan cities), category (8 main families), and free-text keyword. A 3-step ad submission form is designed to make posting quick and frictionless. An anti-spam system with email validation and CAPTCHA protects the platform from abuse. The responsive interface was built mobile-first to suit Moroccan usage patterns, predominantly on smartphone.

Delivered: a custom PHP/MySQL classifieds portal, still live at clico.ma, with multi-criteria search by city, category and keyword, a 3-step posting form, anti-spam protection (email validation and CAPTCHA) and a mobile-first interface.

The short form and broad geographic coverage, from Casablanca to Laayoune, were the two defining choices: the first to reduce friction when posting an ad, the second to stand apart from portals focused on the big cities. Indexed queries, optimized pagination and server-side caching keep pages fast, including during posting peaks.
